Poeta nascitur, non fit.
The poet is born, not made.
The first poem by e. e. cummings that I found nascitur
in is V in `is 5':
yonder deadfromtheneckup graduate of a
somewhat obscure to be sure university spends
her time looking picturesque under
the as it happens quite
erroneous impression that he
nascitur
The rather bitter remarks about the woman involved suggest
a few things. Mayhap the woman is enamoured with some
man (other than cummings clearly; perhaps he would like
her attention)
and it is declared that he is not of any innate quality and talent.
Or perhaps she is with a man upon whom she builds her own picture
of happiness and in truth he is not so real, he is her `made'
version and he is not born, not really the way she believes.
She makes herself picturesque so it would seem this is
for someone she does not yet have.
Kalea's suggestion that nascitur resembles `notices her' seems
another layer too, a very clever enfolding of things.
And another idea, maybe (the nascitur/poet link being so
tantalizing) she attends to the works of another poet
and cummings despises the fact that she would not be
seeking his favours.
